Patran is the integrating environment and graphical user interface for the MD Nastran, MSC Nastran, Marc, Dytran, Sinda, ANSYS or other finite-element analysis systems.

Patran provides import geometrical models from CAD-systems, the creation of computational models, graphical display and process the results.

Patran is the pre-and post-processor, that is, contains no solvers and serves only to prepare the models for the calculation and view the results of the calculation!

Solvers (eg, Nastran) must be downloaded and installed separately.

The new version of Patran 2012 significantly extends the capabilities of the modern engineer to prepare design models for subsequent analysis using finite element methods, finite volume, finite difference, and the SPH-method (Smoothed-particle hydrodynamics, hydrodynamics SPH) and other existing methods for the numerical simulation and Analysis.

The software package known Patran users around the world, above all, as the most versatile, reliable, effective and powerful pre-engineered post-processor for the creation of computational models. In addition to a broad set of tools for quickly creating and optimizing computational grids for complex geometries, Patran has in its arsenal of special advanced methods for generating meshes on 2D surfaces, such as, for example, Midsurface, Advanced Surface Mesher and Sheet Body Mesher, allowing you to create high-quality finite element ( TBE) on a set of grid surfaces of any degree of complexity and "bad" in terms of generating FE meshes of quality.

In Patran there is an extensive list of tools to work with grids in the solid-state 3D-geometry, allowing a settlement as soon as possible FE model of the product in which there is a set of structural elements, such as the chamfers, fillets, holes of any shape.

MSC Software (Santa Ana, CA) announced the 2012 releases of Patran pre-/post-processing software for finite element analysis (FEA), its FE-based durability and damage tolerance solver extension for Patran. The new release, is said to provide engineers with improved modeling productivity, extended nonlinear and failure event simulations.

Patran 2012 sees the debut of a new Model Browser Tree that, says MSC Software, can help users navigate through the menus efficiently as well as access and modify various aspects of their models. Reportedly intuitive and easy to use, the Model Browser Tree, which is available on Windows and Linux platforms, is customizable to the user's process. The company says that the Model Browser Tree reduces learning curves, increases productivity, and makes Patran more intuitive to use because it enables database entities to be visualized, accessed, and manipulated easily.

New, improved, and upgraded features in Patran 2012, says the company, enable engineers to analyze more nonlinear events and study failure more accurately. Newly supported capabilities include cohesive zone modeling and virtual crack propagation for failure analysis, as well as enhanced support for contact that includes segment-to-segment contact detection, contact table enhancements, and new nonlinear elements.

Patran 2012's cohesive zone modeling technique simulates delamination or crack growth. MSC Software says that it's especially beneficial for composite structure failure analysis. Virtual Crack Closure Technique is described as simulating crack growth using a simple, but general way to evaluate the energy release rate of a crack. The segment-to-segment contact method implemented in Marc and MSC Nastran is now supported in Patran. This method is said to provide improved accuracy while overcoming the limitations of the master segment-slave node approach of the traditional node-to-segment contact method. This method is also said to be well-suited for both higher-and lower-order elements and provides smoother contact stresses.

Several new 1D, 2D, and 3D element formulations first implemented in MSC Nastran and Marc are now supported by Patran. Other contact enhancements incorporated into version 2012 include shell edge-to-edge, shell edge-to-solid face, and beam-to-solid face contacts with support for moment carrying glue, and improved contact table support for breaking glue, anisotropic friction and wear factor.

To date, Patran - a full-featured software package for the preparation of models for the linear, nonlinear, and multi-disciplinary settlements. With the help of Patran user is able to quickly prepare a model for such well-known software packages, as MSC Nastran, Marc, Dytran, Flightloads, Patran Thermal, MSC Fatigue, MSC Sinda, LS-DYNA3D, PAMCRASH, SAMCEF, ABAQUS, ANSYS, and so on.

Patran 2012 version got a new perfect tool for the user to design a model in a graphical interactive mode - Model Browser.

Model Browser, or "tree model" allows the engineer to more quickly and efficiently manage the various objects in the current database, such as geometry, material properties of the elements, loads and boundary conditions, various types of loading and settlement cases.

With the Model Browser to Patran 2012 is much easier to navigate by the structure of the computational model - if you choose any of the elements of the database in the Model Browser will automatically open the appropriate application form Patran, in which the user can quickly make the necessary changes or additions. This "visual" form of the c model is essential in times improves the efficiency and speed of the engineer, eliminating the unnecessary manipulation of the multiple menus, forms and applications in Patran. In addition, the use of Model Browser, allows you to partially or completely eliminate the potential user error in the preparation of complex cases and settlement in the formation of chains of different types of calculations in support of integrated and multidisciplinary analyzes.

The changes were made, and dashboards. Thus, in the Display menu, new useful commands executable by one mouse click:

MPC Markers On / Off - allows you to highlight the connection type MPC
Point (0D) Element Markers On / Off - Light in the graphics window elements lumped and distributed mass
Connector Element Markers On / Off - lighting elements simulating the weld points, seams and fasteners.
Filter selection of various geometric and finite-element primitive and complemented by a series of function keys that can make the user more comfortable, especially when working with large models and assemblies.

In Patran implemented the ability to instantly call up frequently used commands, menus, forms and applications at the touch of the right mouse button directly in the graphics window model. The new version of Patran 2012 pull-down menu was supplemented with new tools for working with imported geometry from CAD-systems and preparing simulation model using the main application toolbar Patran.

In the Analysis menu there was the possibility of direct exports of computer models in the pre-postprocessor SimXpert directly during the current session of Patran. This feature greatly speeds up the exchange of data and eliminates errors in the broadcast design model.

Also, it is possible to create zones in the model using a special interface cohesive elements, with both discrete and continuous elements, creating new models of material failure.

Patran 2012 provides training for computer models to study the processes of delamination and crack growth in heterogeneous and homogeneous environments in modern software systems MSC Nastran and Marc.

In the version of Patran 2012, new options for the preparation of computer models to study crack growth using the technique of VCCT (Virtual Crack Closure Technique, a method of virtual crack closure). New options are available in Appendix Load Boundary Conditions toolbar Patran main in the preparation of models for MSC Nastran and Marc.

Patran 2012 supports new types of elements for solving the nonlinear in-depth analysis. Support concerns mainly special types and formulations of finite elements for Marc and the new multi-disciplinary and versatile solutions for the complex sequence of problems of linear and nonlinear statics and dynamics in the MSC Nastran Solution 400 (SOL400).

Patran 2012 now supports a number of new special formulation of beam elements. The same applies to 2D-elements, such as thin and thick plates, membranes and 2D axisymmetric elements. For volumetric 3D-elements also have new language used in nonlinear analysis.

In Patran 2012 can use the following wording for 2D and 3D-elements: Linear Discrete, Kirchhoff, Standard Formulation, Reduced Integration, Incompressible, Interface, Twist, Solid Shell.

Especially for the Marc solver in the Patran 2012 you can set the properties for the interface elements, and elements of type Interface Solid Shell.

The new version of Patran 2012 has a number of improvements to meet the challenges of contact. Besides the standard options to specify a contact Patran 2012 implemented the ability to specify a contact type "segment in the segment" ("segment-to-segment", STS). This is a new formulation for determining the contact interaction between the elements of the study design, which can significantly improve the accuracy of the calculation directly in the contact areas compared with the traditional method of "node-segment" ("node-to-segment", NTS). This method is especially important when using non-matching grids at the mating sites and structures for use in the contact zone of bulk tetrahedral elements. Table of contact in the Analysis menu now supports two new types of definitions of contact interaction - "Breaking Glue" and "Segment to Segment". In addition, with the advent of Patran 2012 can be set to touch the edges of adjacent plates and shells "Shell edge to edge" and ask the contact between the plate edges and faces of volume elements - "Shell edge to solid face". For the beam elements is a new option available jobs contact with the faces of volume elements - "Beam to solid face".
